The history of Granddaddy Purple

Granddaddy Purple went from a low-yielding plant Ken Estes says he first saw up in Humboldt to an Oakland launch in 2003, lines around the corner, and second place in Leafly’s 2025 best-seller list.1,2,3 Its parents, and how much of it Estes bred himself, are still disputed.2,4,5

Why it spread

It looked and smelled the part, and it grew. Leafly describes flowers in shades of deep purple with a grape and berry aroma, and its history of the Purps says Granddaddy Purple brought the same purple appeal as earlier strains while being easier to cultivate, thanks to its higher-yielding Big Bud parent.2,5 Estes told Leafly that over the next two years he tore out his other strains and focused on it exclusively, and Weedmaps says clones are sold by Dark Heart Nursery in Northern California.1,4

It also became breeding stock. Purple Punch, Cherry Pie, Candyland and God’s Gift all list it as a parent, and Leafly’s Purps history says the debut of Purple Punch inflated a countrywide bubble in its cultivation in the 2010s.5,14,16,17,18 Eric Rosen of Purple City Genetics counted Granddaddy Purple among the leaders of the original wave of purple popularity in the early to mid-2000s.5

The name

Estes says the name came to him when he picked up his first pound: “Man, this is like the grandpa of all weed… No…it’s like the Granddaddy.”1 AllBud writes that it “is said to be the grandfather of all weed strains”, and menus shorten it to GDP or write it as Grand Daddy Purp, Granddaddy Purps or Grandaddy Purple.2,4,19

The disputed parts of the story

  • Parents: Purple Urkle × Big Bud in most accounts, Mendo Purps × Skunk × Afghanistan on Leafly’s strain page, and Purple Medicine or crosses of Skunk strains in Estes’s own accounts (see genetics).1,2,4,5
  • Who made it: Leafly and Weedmaps say Estes popularized it, and United Cannabis Seeds and Estes’s breeder page say he developed it; when Leafly reported the 2003 cutting attributed to Estes, Ghost of ABF Genetics added, “Nobody in the Bay ever called it that.”2,4,5,20,21
  • Where: Estes says the Pomo had the plant up in Humboldt and that he launched it in Oakland; Weedmaps says he popularized it in Northern California.1,4
  • Awards: only the 2015 Denver win has independent press coverage; the 2004–2006 first prizes appear in the Apothecary text, while Apothecary’s own history credits its 2005 and 2006 Green Cup wins to Grape Ape.8,9,11
  • Film and TV: the Pineapple Express and Weeds mentions are Estes’s account in his Leafly interview.1
